The door of his apartment slammed behind his back and Kame was already taking off his shoes. He didn’t bother taking his bag along to the living room, just throwing it into a corner and leaving it there. He was not going to work today anymore, the lyrics for a song he had been working on recently could wait for later.
After an all day photoshooting and one of the most boring interviews in his whole life Kame was up for only three things: first of all a long and comfortable bath, then probably even more comfortable bed and the last – not least though – a call he had been looking forward to most of the terrific day.
One by one Kame went through the steps necessary for lying himself into a tube full of warm water and buoyant cloudlets of fragrant foam, then massaging his body rubbing a cream into the moist skin and finally wrapping himself into a fluffy bathrobe to make himself comfortable and good snuggling down in the bed. He dialed a well known number and waited.
“You are early today,” a deep voice answered after a few moments of ringing.
Unwittingly, Kame’s lips curled into a smile. Of course he would love to better have Jin by his side at the moment instead of only hearing his voice, even more now when Jin was once again back in Japan and just today they might have actually happened to be under the same roof for some time, sadly without seeing each other. But with all the paparazzi chasing after the older one it was safer this way, talking over the phone couldn’t make any harm.
“Early? My day must have had at least thirty hours,” Kame sighed. The last thing he wanted to do was complaining, partly because it was not like him to whine about how hard his work was, and partly because the time with Jin was too precious to waste it like that. But at the same time he knew he would have most probably told Jin about his damn day anyway if the other one had been here with him no matter what, and they were trying to act naturally, after all.
From the sounds on the other side of the line Kame guessed Jin moved around the room he was in and all the muffled rustling could have meant him sitting down onto a bed. The image of Jin surrounded by pillows and cushions lightened Kame’s mood a little and he even silently chuckled.
Jin took the chuckling as a good sign. He was half sitting, half lying on a simple bed in a hotel room, the place was too impersonal and strange yet being it his only chance for a little of privacy he couldn’t have chosen twice. “Tired much?” he asked caringly. His voice got even softer, an imaginary touch of velvet caressing Kazuya’s whole exhausted existence. “Is there anything I could do for you?” Every single word was enlacing the younger one like a warm, loving hug. Kame nestled up to the pillow and let out a silent purr.
“Tell me something…”
“What do you want to hear? Should I sing for you again?” Jin grinned remembering their last call two days ago. But the truth was he wouldn’t mind singing for Kame again, at all.
“Maybe?”
The smile on Jin’s face grew wider. He didn’t need to actually see Kazuya right in front of him to know the younger one’s expression at the moment. Already half drifted away yet stubbornly staying awake to prolong the time spent with him. “Or maybe I could touch your face,” Jin whispered, “my finger would be caressing your cheek… and you could feel my breath just before I would kiss you…”
Unconsciously, Kame emitted a content moan. Closing his eyes he could feel every one of Jin’s suggestive words. He licked his lips, having to remind himself to hold the phone at his ear not to miss anything of what would Jin say. “And then…?” he demanded a bit childishly when it seemed to him Jin had been silent for too long.
“Then I would kiss you, Kazu and –”
“You got to be kidding me, Akanishi!”
“Fuck!” Jin shrieked in surprise dropping the phone only to immediately trying to blindly reach for it again somewhere between his legs.
“Jin?....Jin? What has happened?”
Kame’s muffled voice was coming out from the phone but was not helping Jin at all.
“Don’t tell me I’ve just run into another your phone session with the cute turtle boy…”
“What’s going on? JIN!”
Jin groaned. He was happy like never before when he finally found the phone raising it to his ear again. “It’s okay, Kazu, I’m here, I’m here. Everything is fine, just…” he hissed at the figure leaning against the doorframe leading to the bathroom, his free hand made a sharp gesture indicating a decapitation. But all he got was a stuck tongue and jingly giggling.
“Yeah, Kazu, everything is just fine,” someone sing-sang sweetly.
Jin blinked. “Kame, maybe we should –”
“Is it Lizzy over there with you?” Kame asked curiously.
“Yeah,” Jin sighed making a grimace Kame couldn’t have seen. “I’m sorry.”
“What the hell are you sorry for, Jinny? Give me the phone, I want to say hi,” Lizzy jumped onto the bed sitting next to Jin snatching the phone but Jin somehow managed to keep it away from her reach. “HI KAZUYA!” the girl at least shouted, making sure her head was close enough to Jin’s to cause him ringing in the ear. She glanced at Jin burning him through and smirked.
“Hi Lizzy,” Kame sighed yet his voice sounded rather cheerfully.
The blondie happily wrinkled her little nose. “See, Jinny? He wants me to tell him hi.”
Jin felt like either resignedly facepalming himself or unleashing his fret and killing someone. “No, he is just being polite. Any idea about the actual meaning of the word?”
“Well, maybe –”
“Jin? I can call you later…tomorrow…”
“Don’t you dare hanging up!” Jin yelped, pitch black eyes piercing Lizzy meanwhile, giving her all the hints to finally move on and leave him alone.
The girl teasingly fidgeted getting even nearer to Jin, more than amused by the current situation. “Tell me, KAZUYA,” she pronounced the name a bit louder to tease Jin even more because she was actually talking to him and not to the guy on the other side of the line, “should I leave and give you two some time alone?”
“Lizzy!” Jin hissed with a not that much of only a hint of threat in his low voice. Kame might have not been the best in speaking and understanding English but Jin was sure as hell Lizzy’s remarks were bright like a morning sky to him, too. “The fuck! Get out of here!”
“Jinny,” she pouted sighing markedly, “you promised to take care of me…”
“Because you were down and broken and not messing my life up!” Jin retorted, now keeping a hand over the phone to silence the whole situation from Kame.
“Maybe I still am.” Lizzy lied down placing her head onto Jin’s thigh and looked up right onto the young man, staring at him with exaggerated kicked puppy eyes. “And I need to be comforted and cheered up.”
“I really think I should…”
Jin was getting desperate. He was well aware of his promise to help Lizzy to get over her break-up but back then he really hadn’t been expecting it could require his full attention. Because honestly, no matter how much Jin liked the girl and had fun spending time with her, her constant company was quickly getting on his nerves, especially now when he wanted to be alone with Kame… or at least with Kame on the phone. Yet the promise had been made and he couldn’t just send her away… moreover not now when they were sharing the same room.
But once Lizzy nestled a little onto his lap a mischievous idea came on Jin’s mind and he couldn’t suppress a grin. Well, it would have been surely impolite to send her away but no one said he could make her leave on her own. He took the phone into his other hand fidgeting a little to make himself comfortable. “It’s done, Kazu, I’m here. Where have we stopped?” Jin asked seductively trying hard not to burst into laughing spotting the consternation in Lizzy’s widened eyes. She only gasped mouthing some incoherent words, not believing Jin would dare… and just then she realized not only he did dare but he was actually in the middle of the process, his hand slowly finding its way down his chest and the girl gulped heavily springing up.
“Is she really gone?” Kame was a bit suspicious, even through the haze of his sleepiness.
“The hell KAZUYA!” Lizzy shrieked hitting Jin with a clenched fist. “I’m still here and the perv was going to… argh! Akanishi!” The next moment Lizzy was standing at the door, snatching her bag and jacket on the way there.
Jin grinned. “So you are going out, after all?” he asked innocently.
“I’m so going to kill you for this!”
“You could stay –”
“AKANISHI!!”
“AKANISHI!” Taking a deep breath not to swoop down on the unbelievable idiot who was smirking at her from the bed Lizzy rushed out of the room slamming the door. The whole floor had to know now something had happened.
“Great, now she is finally away,” Jin chuckled.
“And I’m going to sleep now….”
It took a moment before Jin’s head proceeded Kame’s words. “You…? No, no, no, wait! I’m sorry, Kazu, ne? She is,” Jin was trying hard to find the right words. Of course they had been already talking about it… hell, Lizzy had been one of the main topics of most of the conversations he and Kame had had lately, because Lizzy was literally everywhere. Jin knew he should do something about it, and he should do something quickly… but he had no idea what it should be. “You know what she is like. And all the crap going on with her lately… she just needs a friend.”
Kame sighed. He was all silent for a moment, thinking back about everything what had happened in the last weeks, about everything he had overheard, all the stories the press made up, the seemingly innocent hints the PR section slipped to keep Jin’s name on the sight of public… and Kame once again realized it was not all the hard work and lack of sleep and privacy he hated the most in his job, the main reason why he was sometimes thinking of leaving everything behind was they were not allowed to be who they really were. Already a long time ago each of them had been given an image they had to follow and fulfill.
“And you are the only good boy around…”
Jin tried not to chuckle at Kame’s spike tone. Kame was usually able to control himself perfectly, only rarely showing his true feelings and thoughts, and if he did, it was always only to Jin, exactly like now. Sometimes Jin thought Kame wasn’t even noticing it. “Kazu?”
“I know Jin, okay? I know how things work and I’m not surprised at all after my little joke during the tv magazine interview. Really. I’m just…” Kame mumbled being well aware of how ridiculous it was to have this conversation over the phone… or actually have it at all. Maybe the day had more than some thirty hours and he was just in a desperate need of sleeping. “I’m tired of having to listen to all the bullshits on a daily basis all the time and then even knowing she can be with you while I –”
The Jin they wanted him to be would have tried to comfort Kame right now, telling him all the nice learnt phrases which were everything but what he himself would have said, though. But that Jin was meant for the public, that Jin was supposed to say the things he was missing while being away from Japan were his Mum and Dad and sushi… That was the Jin they made up.
But once being all alone behind the cameras, moreover being alone with Kame, the made up Jin was nothing but a shadow.
Of course Jin was missing his family – but he was missing Kazuya more. And if he really missed sushi, then it was the one Kame was always making when they could spend more time together. Jin didn’t have to comfort Kame because he knew the younger one would have never let him do that. Not in this case.
“You are jealous!” Jin beamed, giggling. Kame could be so cute sometimes.
“I’m not.”
And the pout Jin could clearly imagine on Kazuya’s pink lips at the moment was the last strew needed. Jin jumped out of the bed taking his wallet and keys.
“Jin?”
“I’m going over, Kazuya. Give me thirty minutes and I’m there.”
“Jin, what –?” Kame didn’t understand what was going on first, the rustling sounds on Jin’s side of the line were strange, as well as Jin’s quickening breathing. “Are you crazy? What about the papar–”
Jin was on his way down the back stair. He had checked the possible ways out of the hotel before and the kitchen door for supply seemed to be a good choice.
“Fuck them, Kazu. I couldn’t be with you on your birthday but the hell I’m going to spend another night in the same damn city without seeing you.” Finally out on the street Jin put on his hood pulling it deep down into his face. He waved at a taxi and carefully enough not to show himself too much said the final destination, two blocks from where Kame lived, just to be safe.
He didn’t come back to the hotel before the next morning, sneaking in the same way he had left, stripping the hoodie and throwing himself onto the bed, immediately falling asleep and not waking up before the noon. He really didn’t care about Lizzy’s taunting which she seemed to be more than enjoying the whole day then. And when Josh, all amused and snickering like an idiot, showed him an article saying Jin Akanishi spent a night at a hotel with his blonde back dancer Jin just rolled his eyes quickly typing a message untypically full of emojis and sent it with a smile on his lips.
He didn’t need tabloids to know how great his night had been.
